"We Cannot Solve Our Problems With The Same Thinking Used When We Created Them"

Introducing a Creative Platform Built to Facilitate Citizen Engagement

"Inmates Matter" rings true when a loved one is behind bars but does it ring true for you?

At St Columba's Church in Oakland, CA a statement was made relating the human being's inherent need to feel valued, important, and loved...

Our knee jerk reaction is, "Yes!  I feel valued, so certainly others would want the same."  We also have every reason to believe that "love" and "goodness" are limitless in their bounds and infinite in their qualities.  In truth, it is all peoples highest purpose to advocate for every activity that increases love and goodness.  Time has told us that in the "virtues" is life.

Nevertheless, we live in a materialistic world.  Some people are born with more.  Others with less.  Children know abandonment, deprivation, and severe loss in California.  The mission to spread love and goodness becomes a greater challenge when opposed by real forces.

Yet as all people know, every journey begins with a step and all life begins in a seed.  Our own well-being is tied to the lives of others.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

People of values recognize opportunities to make the world a better place.  This can be done by holding one's tongue when in a confrontation. Or on occasion giving a buck to someone even though it's against a personal policy.  Love is less of a principle and more of an action. Love knows itself.  Thereby loves goal is to generate love, to know more of itself.

In a materialistic world, we often love slowly and love through knowing.  It is more difficult to hate those whom we know and those whom we understand...

"No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket.  Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand so it can give light to everyone" (Matthew 5:15.) For California to become great again we must reach out to one another and work out our common values. Such work must begin with us, where we live.  We ought to support those who are doing our work and we must put forth an effort ourselves.

As stated by Tio MacDonald in his presentation given at St. Columba's church, "Interaction is enough!"  Let us put our minds to build and to support the beloved community in every manifestation, especially with respect to the poor.

The East Oakland Times is building a platform for the voiceless

  • Dignity of Life - Life is the Basis for All Rights
  • check
Liberty - Granting others the right to determine their own lives puts responsibility where it belongs
  • check
Tolerance - Personal growth occurs when we effort to understand others different than ourselves

The problem with touching a hot stove is that it will burn the hand, resulting in pain.  Pain is something we certainly do not want for ourselves and certainly should not want for others.  Those who are warned and touch the hot stove had to learn the hard way.  However, what will often be found in the lives of inmates is that they did not know right from wrong for they grew up in a reality where wrongdoing is perpetuated by masquerading as a self-benefit.

Our policies are dependent on our knowledge

Heather MacDonald, author of Are Cops Racists?, and Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, look at two sides to the same problem, criminality in America.  Both authors address race.  Both authors evaluate the benefit of punitive responses to crime.  Both find human suffering in a course of American policy currently taken.

Creative solutions are needed: We must solve our problems by employing thought processes different than the thinking used that generated our current social problems.

Tio MacDonald

Hello, my name is Tio MacDonald and I am the Founder and Chief Editor of the East Oakland Times.  I am the man with the ever-changing mustache seen in the photos and it is a privilege to be in the position to present to you the My Crime Series. The privilege is mine because I have been gifted with the expertise, will, intelligence, and gumption to create a collection of books available for purchase on this site that allows for a vicarious journey into the hearts and minds of the incarcerated.

Please note, this is just a beginning.  By purchasing books from this site you will make possible future efforts to bring to light true Californian (American) experiences of the poor in our post-post-modern world!

Mother Teresa noted that poverty has a variety of forms.  Poverty is generally considered to mean a lack of material goods necessary for life.  In California, one of the largest economies in the world, poverty can often take the shape of a "poverty of spirit."  The belly is satiated while the mind and the heart crave to feel recognized, regarded, and of greater worth.

"Hurt People, Hurt People" is a saying often heard in prison rehabilitation circles.  What it states is that locking a man or woman away in prison will not cease the continual transference of hurt from that individual to others.

See what Amazon reviewers have to say:

Spinner's Story - Book One of the My Crime Series

"This was a true story, written from the heart. One can see immediately how challenging a life this young man has had. Little guidance, love or even care. And yet, he has a lot of insight into his life, his behavior. A good but "difficult" read."

- S. Quilley Powers

Holler at Your Girl - Book Two of the My Crime Series

A fabulous story. A fast read, you just can’t put the book down. I want more of this story. My heart went out to the child who couldn’t be what the family wanted which lead to attention getting behavior!

-Anonymous

Hood to Heels - Book Three of the My Crime Series

Wasn't expecting the twist at the end, very engaging!

- ocean edgar

Mouthpiece - Book Four of the My Crime Series

The story of Mouthpiece is disturbing, but compelling. Mouthpiece grew up in Richmond, CA. He became a gangster and a pimp. Even though he is a hardened criminal his humanity comes out especially the time when he shot and when he became a father.

- James Watrous

38 Years Later - Book Five of the My Crime Series

Liked that it was easy to read and showed the progression from an ordinary man to a man being incarcerated at San Quentin. It could happen to anyone.

- Carla Krawczyk

Single Books at inmatesmatter.com are the Best Deal!

You may find someone in the Bay Area selling My Crime Books on the streets for a cash donation.  If you do, you are lucky.  Otherwise this is the place to purchase the single books of the My Crime Series.  (Single book prices on Amazon are like California real estate, inflated.)

The Earth is Born in Our Image Each Day

Let Us Make the Bay Area, California, and Beyond Just

The world we know is a mesh of inheritance, functionality, and beliefs.  Within each is variability and it is in the variance where our collective imagination, will, and know-how can come together now to shape our world rather than passively accept the world as it is presented to us.

California is only as good as the people that live here!  Same goes for Oakland, Walnut Creek, Pleasanton, Albany, Marin, and San Francisco.  We need to support the people and organizations we believe in and hold those same people and organizations to our own high standards.  Further, we need to participate in increasing the expansion of love in this world.

The East Oakland Times aims to bring voice to the unheard, the poor, and has done so.  With your support the work can continue.
